Device Enclosure: Important Notice
The WaterMeterKit enclosure (the main unit) is not waterproof or moisture-resistant. The device contains sensitive electronics and must be protected from water and excessive humidity.
โ ๏ธ Warranty Exclusion: Damage caused by water ingress or moisture is not covered by warranty.
Suitable Installation Locations
- โ Dry basements and cellars
- โ Dry crawl spaces
- โ Indoor utility cabinets / meter cupboards
- โ Outdoor water meter pits, only if dry and protected (see tips below)
Locations to Avoid
- โ Areas where water can drip or splash onto the device
- โ Flooded or regularly wet areas
- โ Unprotected outdoor locations exposed to rain
- โ Areas with constant condensation dripping onto the device
Outdoor Water Meter Pits
Many water meters are installed in underground pits or enclosures outside. These can be challenging environments:
๐ก Option 1: If the pit is dry and well-sealed, you can install the WaterMeterKit inside, but monitor for moisture buildup.
๐ก Option 2: Install the WaterMeterKit in a separate weatherproof enclosure (IP65+) inside the pit.
๐ก Option 3: Mount the WaterMeterKit outside the pit in a dry location (e.g., garage, shed), and run only the sensor cable into the pit to reach the water meter.
Water Sensor: Important Notice
The water sensor included with the WaterMeterKit is only lightly moisture-resistant. It is designed for typical water meter cabinet conditions but is not suitable for permanently humid environments.
โ ๏ธ Warranty Exclusion: Damage to the water sensor caused by excessive moisture or permanent humidity is not covered by warranty.
Protecting Your Sensor
- โ Normal water meter cabinet conditions are fine
- โ Occasional condensation is acceptable
- โ Do not install in constantly wet or flooded areas
- โ Do not submerge the sensor in water
- โ Avoid areas with constant high humidity (>80% RH)
Sensor Cable
The sensor cable is 3 meters long. On V3 it plugs into the kit and can be detached, on V1 and V2 it is connected with a screw terminal. Extending it beyond this length is not recommended due to voltage drop causing unreliable readings.
โ ๏ธ Warranty Exclusion: Any sensor cable modifications or extensions are at your own risk and not covered by warranty.
๐ See Installation Guide for details on disconnecting and cable limitations.
Replacement Sensors
On V3 the sensor cable plugs into the kit, on V1 and V2 it uses a screw terminal connection. If your water sensor needs to be replaced, you can order a new one from our webshop:

Third-Party Modifications
The WaterMeterKit uses open-source ESPHome firmware, making it fully customizable.
What's Covered
- โ Manufacturing defects in the WaterMeterKit hardware
- โ Firmware issues with the official SmartHomeShop firmware
- โ Component failures under normal use
What's Not Covered
We cannot provide warranty or support for:
- ๐ง Custom firmware modifications or third-party firmware
- ๐ง Hardware modifications (soldering, component swaps)
- ๐ง Software changes that cause the device to malfunction
- ๐ง Configuration changes that deviate from our documentation
- ๐ง Damage from improper power supply (using non-standard voltages)
Tinkerers welcome! We love that our products are built on open platforms like ESPHome. Feel free to experiment and customize. Just know that once you modify the hardware or flash custom firmware, you're in DIY territory. Our Discord community is a great place to get help from fellow enthusiasts!
WaterMeterKit vs WaterP1MeterKit
The WaterMeterKit is a simplified version focused purely on water monitoring:
| Feature | WaterMeterKit | WaterP1MeterKit |
|---|---|---|
| Water monitoring | โ | โ |
| P1 energy meter (RJ12) | โ | โ |
| WiFi | โ | โ |
| Ethernet/PoE | โ | โ (V2 and later) |
| Sensor cable | Fixed (V1/V2) or Detachable (V3) | Fixed (V1/V2) or Detachable (V3/V4) |
| Temperature & Humidity | โ | โ |
๐ก Need energy monitoring too? Consider the WaterP1MeterKit which includes P1 energy meter support and Ethernet/PoE connectivity.
