Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the P1SplitterKit.

General Questions

1. What is the P1SplitterKit?

The P1SplitterKit is a hardware device that splits your smart meter's P1 port into 5 output ports, allowing you to connect multiple devices to read your energy data simultaneously.

2. Does the P1SplitterKit require software or WiFi?

No. The P1SplitterKit is a pure hardware solution — no software, no WiFi, no configuration needed. Just plug in and go.

3. Does the P1SplitterKit store or process any data?

No. The P1SplitterKit simply passes through the data signal from your meter to all connected devices. It doesn't store, process, or transmit any data.

Compatibility

4. Which smart meters are compatible?

The P1SplitterKit works with all Dutch smart meters that have a P1 port:

  • DSMR v4.0, v4.2, v5.0 protocols
  • Landis+Gyr (E350, E360, E450, E460)
  • Kaifa (MA105, MA304, MA305)
  • Kamstrup (162, 382, 402)
  • Sagemcom (T210-D, T211)
  • Iskra (AM550, MT382)

5. Will it work with Belgian smart meters?

Belgian meters use different protocols. The P1SplitterKit is designed for Dutch DSMR meters. Check if your Belgian meter has a compatible P1 port.

6. Which devices can I connect?

Any device that reads P1/DSMR data via RJ12:

  • SmartHomeShop P1MeterKit / WaterP1MeterKit
  • HomeWizard P1 Meter
  • Solar inverters with P1 input
  • DSMR Reader software (via serial adapter)
  • Energy management systems

7. Can I connect more than 5 devices?

The P1SplitterKit has 5 output ports. If you need more, you could potentially chain two splitters, but this is not officially supported and may cause signal issues.

Power Questions

8. Do I need a USB-C power adapter?

It depends:

  • DSMR v5 meters usually provide enough power via the P1 port for 1-2 devices
  • DSMR v4 meters or 3+ devices may require USB-C power
  • When in doubt, use USB-C power for best reliability

9. What does the power switch do?

The switch selects the power source:

  • Left position: Power from P1 port only
  • Right position: Power from USB-C (required)

10. Can I use any USB-C adapter?

Yes, any standard 5V USB-C adapter with at least 500mA (2.5W) will work. Most phone chargers are sufficient.

Signal & Data

11. Is there any data loss when using the splitter?

No. The P1SplitterKit uses hardware signal amplification to ensure all 5 outputs receive the full, unmodified data signal.

12. How long can the cables be?

  • Up to 5 meters: Standard RJ12 cables work fine
  • 5-15 meters: Use quality shielded cables
  • 15+ meters: May experience signal degradation

13. Do all devices receive data at the same time?

Yes. All connected devices receive the same data signal simultaneously.

14. What baud rate does the P1SplitterKit support?

The P1SplitterKit is a passive signal amplifier — it passes through whatever baud rate your meter uses (typically 115200 for DSMR v5, or 9600 for older versions).

Installation

15. Where should I install the P1SplitterKit?

Install it near your smart meter for the shortest cable run. The included 1-meter cable connects to your meter.

16. Can I mount it on the wall?

The P1SplitterKit doesn't include mounting hardware, but it's light enough to hang by its cables or you can use adhesive strips/velcro.

17. Which cable goes where?

  • INPUT (arrow pointing in): Connect to your smart meter
  • OUTPUT 1-5: Connect to your devices (any order)

Troubleshooting

18. The Power LED is off

  1. Check the power switch position
  2. If using P1 power: Your meter may not provide enough power — switch to USB-C
  3. Verify the RJ12 cable is fully connected to the meter's P1 port

19. Data LEDs are not flashing

  1. Data LEDs only flash when a device requests data
  2. Check if your device is powered on and configured correctly
  3. Try connecting the device directly to the meter to verify it works
  4. Check your RJ12 cable connections

20. One device works but another doesn't

  1. Try swapping the devices between ports
  2. Try a different RJ12 cable
  3. Some devices may need specific configuration for DSMR version

21. My devices worked directly but not through the splitter

  1. Switch to USB-C power mode
  2. Ensure all cables are fully inserted
  3. Try disconnecting other devices to isolate the issue

Purchasing

22. What's included in the box?

  • P1SplitterKit main unit
