Firmware Guide

Local operation and GitHub update checks

The local Home Assistant firmware keeps UltimateSensor Mini v1 measurements on your own network. Sensor readings go directly to Home Assistant and are not sent to GitHub or the SmartHomeShop cloud.

The Wi-Fi firmware includes an ESPHome update entity. It periodically reads a small firmware manifest from SmartHomeShop GitHub Pages to compare the installed version with the latest release. Only firmware metadata is requested; the firmware file is downloaded only when you install an update.

Cloud firmware intentionally communicates with the SmartHomeShop app as part of its cloud features. Disabling the GitHub update check does not convert cloud firmware into local firmware.

Use UltimateSensor Mini v1 without internet access

You may block internet access for UltimateSensor Mini v1; its local measurements and Home Assistant connection continue to work. To prevent a blocked check from triggering the red status LED, take control of the device in the ESPHome Device Builder app/add-on, open its YAML and add this at the bottom:

update:
  - id: !extend firmware_update
    update_interval: never

Save the YAML, select Validate, and install the build using Install > Wirelessly. This disables scheduled checks only; it does not remove the update component or change any UltimateSensor Mini v1 sensors.

The adopted YAML continues to contain a packages: link to the SmartHomeShop GitHub repository. ESPHome uses that link on the Home Assistant host when it compiles your firmware. The device itself no longer polls for firmware versions after the customized build is installed.

To restore automatic checks, remove the added update: block and install the firmware again. If ESPHome cannot find the firmware_update ID, update UltimateSensor Mini v1 through the SmartHomeShop web flasher before applying this customization.

This guide explains how to update or reflash firmware on UltimateSensor Mini v1.

Updating from 2.42 or older? Version 3.0 requires a one-time USB-C installation. Follow the dedicated Version 3.0 Upgrade Guide. Do not install this migration through Home Assistant or OTA.

The firmware files are available on GitHub.

Firmware Variants

Firmware variant Webshop variant Use this when
WiFi Basic (local) Without SPS30 Your Mini v1 does not have particulate matter sensing and only needs Home Assistant
WiFi Complete (local) With SPS30 Your Mini v1 has particulate matter sensing and only needs Home Assistant
WiFi Basic + SmartHomeShop App (cloud) Without SPS30 Your Mini v1 does not have particulate matter sensing and must sync with the App
WiFi Complete + SmartHomeShop App (cloud) With SPS30 Your Mini v1 has particulate matter sensing and must sync with the App

Basic and Complete both include microphone, speaker, media player and local wake-word support. The difference is the particulate matter sensor in the Complete model. The former beta is now part of normal production firmware.

Future Updates Through Home Assistant

Use these steps only after version 3.0 has been installed via USB-C:

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings -> Devices & services -> Devices.
  2. Select your UltimateSensor Mini v1.
  3. Open the Entities tab.
  4. Enable the disabled-by-default UltimateSensor Mini Firmware update entity if needed.
  5. Select the required local or cloud build with UltimateSensor Mini Firmware Variant.
  6. Install the available update through the UltimateSensor Mini Firmware update entity.

The selector always stays within Mini v1 WiFi firmware. Mini v1 has no Ethernet build.

All variants of a release have the same version number. The update entity therefore only offers another variant when that has a newer version than the installed one. To switch right away, install through USB-C.

Installing Through USB-C

Use USB-C to switch variants right away or to recover a device:

  1. Connect the Mini v1 directly to your computer with a USB-C data cable.
  2. Open smarthomeshop.io/en/firmware?product=ultimatesensor-mini&hardware=v1 in Chrome or Edge.
  3. Choose how you use the device, then Basic or Complete.
  4. Click Install firmware and choose the USB port.

This returns the device to its factory settings. Set up WiFi again through the ultimatesensor-mini hotspot.

Boot Sound

The Boot Sound switch controls the embedded start-up sound and front LED animation. Turn it off in Home Assistant when the device must start silently. The setting is retained after a restart.

No Ethernet Firmware on Mini v1

Mini v1 is WiFi-only. Do not flash Mini v2 Ethernet firmware on Mini v1 hardware.
