Firmware

Pre-release documentation. CeilSense Mini has not been officially released yet. The design, specifications and firmware can still change until release. Check ceilsense.nl for the current planning.

CeilSense Mini runs on ESPHome on an ESP32-C6 with 4 MB flash. The firmware is not published yet. Firmware files and install steps are published at release. This page explains how the firmware is set up, so you know what to choose.

What the Firmware Does

The firmware reads the light sensor and the radars and brings them into Home Assistant as entities. It also controls the LED ring and the buzzer, shows the rainbow during start-up and serves a local web page on port 80. All entities are listed in Sensor Definitions.

Local and Cloud

Local firmware Cloud firmware
Home Assistant Yes, through ESPHome Yes, on supported firmware
SmartHomeShop app No Yes
Where your readings go They stay on your network Also to your SmartHomeShop account
Needs an account and internet No Yes
Status for CeilSense Mini Current firmware Planned, not published

The app needs an account, internet and matching cloud firmware. Features and history depend on the model, firmware and subscription. Supported firmware lets you use both together. See SmartHomeShop App.

WiFi and Ethernet

WiFi and Ethernet are separate firmware builds. The device runs one of them at a time.

  • WiFi firmware is the current firmware. It opens the setup network CeilSense Mini Setup and has a captive portal.
  • Ethernet and PoE firmware is planned for release. It connects through the cable, with or without PoE.

Switching means installing the other firmware. See Network Configuration.

Radar Configurations

The firmware has to match the modules in the device.

Configuration Status
LD2412 + LD2450 In the current WiFi firmware
LD2460 Planned for release, runs the radar in top mode
LD6002B Planned for release, runs the radar in top mode. Not finished yet.

Installing a different radar means installing different firmware. Never fit a combination that is not supported: see Radar and Sensor Modules.

What Follows With Release Firmware

These parts are not in the current firmware yet:

  • Ethernet and PoE firmware;
  • builds for the LD2460 and the LD6002B;
  • cloud firmware for the SmartHomeShop app;
  • Room Designer polygon zones;
  • further buzzer sounds;
  • over-the-air updates through Home Assistant;
  • USB-C flashing steps.

Updates Over the Air

Updates over the air through Home Assistant arrive at release. ESPHome announces new firmware in Home Assistant, so you do not need to reach the sensor on the ceiling.

Flashing Through USB-C

The steps for flashing through USB-C are published at release. Do not install V1 or V2 firmware on the Mini: they use different hardware.

License

The firmware for the CeilSense family will be public on GitHub under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license. You can change it for your own use. Commercial use is not allowed.

The LD2412, LD2450 and LD6002B radars are part of ESPHome. SmartHomeShop maintains the LD2460 component.

Custom Firmware

You can customize the firmware for your own use, but custom firmware affects support. We cannot give warranty or support for problems caused by custom or third-party firmware. See Warranty and Support.
