LED Ring and Buzzer

CeilSense Mini can give signals back to the room with a ring of 16 RGB LEDs and a piezo buzzer. Apart from the rainbow during start-up, both do nothing until you use them.

LED Ring

The ring has 16 individually addressable WS2812-type RGB LEDs around the device. It lights up all around, while the ring on CeilSense V2 shines down. Home Assistant controls it as one light called LED Ring, with color, brightness and effect.

The current firmware has no built-in motion light or night light. You build these yourself with automations, as shown below.

Start-Up Rainbow

During start-up the ring shows a rainbow. It fades out when WiFi and the light sensor are ready, at most about 20 seconds after power-on. After that the ring is off until you use it.

  • The rainbow appears at every start, also after a restart or a power cut, so it can briefly light up a dark room.
  • The current firmware has no setting to switch it off.
  • The ring does not remember its state. After a start it is off, even if it was on before.

Effects

The current firmware has one effect. The effects Color Wipe and Breathing from the V2 firmware are not in the Mini firmware.

Effect What it does
Rainbow Colors run around the ring

Control the Ring

Open LED Ring on the device page to set the color, brightness and effect by hand. In a script or automation, use light.turn_on and light.turn_off.

action: light.turn_on
target:
  entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring
data:
  rgb_color: [255, 120, 0]
  brightness_pct: 30

With the effect:

action: light.turn_on
target:
  entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring
data:
  effect: Rainbow

Note: Entity IDs can differ per installation, because they start with your device name. Check yours on the device page.

Automation Examples

Soft Night Light

The ring as a dim light when someone walks by at night.

alias: "Night light on"
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.ceilsense_mini_presence
    to: "on"
conditions:
  - condition: time
    after: "23:00:00"
    before: "06:00:00"
actions:
  - action: light.turn_on
    target:
      entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring
    data:
      rgb_color: [255, 180, 110]
      brightness_pct: 10
alias: "Night light off"
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.ceilsense_mini_presence
    to: "off"
    for:
      minutes: 1
actions:
  - action: light.turn_off
    target:
      entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring

Red Ring When a Door Stays Open

alias: "Door left open: ring red"
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.back_door
    to: "on"
    for:
      minutes: 5
actions:
  - action: light.turn_on
    target:
      entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring
    data:
      rgb_color: [255, 0, 0]
      brightness_pct: 30
alias: "Door closed: ring off"
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.back_door
    to: "off"
actions:
  - action: light.turn_off
    target:
      entity_id: light.ceilsense_mini_led_ring

Doorbell Signal

See Usage for a short signal when the doorbell rings.

Heat and Light

LEDs that burn brightly for a long time give off some heat, so use the ring dimmed or briefly. The Mini has no climate sensors, so there is no temperature reading for the ring to affect. Its light can play a part in Illuminance: see Calibration.

Buzzer

The piezo buzzer is silent unless you use it. In the current firmware, Home Assistant has a Buzzer Test button that plays a short four-note melody. You find it under Diagnostic on the device page.

An automation can press the button:

alias: "Timer finished: buzzer"
triggers:
  - trigger: event
    event_type: timer.finished
    event_data:
      entity_id: timer.laundry
actions:
  - action: button.press
    target:
      entity_id: button.ceilsense_mini_buzzer_test

Further sounds will follow with release firmware.
