Quick Start

Pre-release documentation. CeilSense Mini has not been officially released yet. The design, specifications and firmware can still change until release. Check ceilsense.nl for the current planning.

This is the shortest route from box to Home Assistant. The Installation Guide has the full details for the ceiling, the cables and the first start.

Safety: CeilSense Mini is for indoor use only. It cannot run on mains: power it with USB-C or PoE only.

What You Need

  • CeilSense Mini with a radar configuration
  • Power: a USB-C supply (5 V, at least 1 A, not included). PoE (IEEE 802.3af) needs Ethernet and PoE firmware, which is planned for release.
  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network. The current firmware is WiFi only.
  • Home Assistant
  • Firmware that matches your radar configuration. Firmware and install steps are published at release: see Firmware.

Steps

  1. Power it on the table. Test the device before it goes on the ceiling. Connect USB-C. The LED ring shows a rainbow during start-up and fades out after at most about 20 seconds. The buzzer stays silent. That is normal.
  2. Connect it to your network. Wait until the setup network CeilSense Mini Setup appears, which can take 1 to 2 minutes. Connect your phone or laptop to it, choose your own 2.4 GHz WiFi network in the captive portal and enter the password.
  3. Add it to Home Assistant. Go to Settings > Devices & services. ESPHome devices are discovered automatically: select CeilSense Mini and add it. If it does not appear, see Network Configuration.
  4. Check the entities. Open the device page. Presence shows unknown until both radars have reported, and after that it should change when you move in front of the radar. Illuminance should show a value. Switch on LED Ring and press Buzzer Test.
  5. Mount it. Disconnect the power. For recessed mounting, make the Ø 68 mm cut-out, connect your cable and push the sensor in: the spring clips hold it against the ceiling. For surface mounting, fix the mounting plate to the ceiling: only the cable needs to pass through. Follow the Installation Guide.
  6. Tune the radar. Empty the room and press LD2412 Start Dynamic Background Correction. This is explained in Calibration.
  7. Build on it. Create your first automation, or add the optional SmartHomeShop.io integration for the Room Designer and the CeilSense card.
