Firmware

Pre-release documentation. CeilSense Pro has not been officially released yet. The design, specifications and firmware can still change until release. Check ceilsense.nl for the current planning.

CeilSense Pro will run on ESPHome on an ESP32-S3. The firmware for the final CeilSense Pro is not written yet. Firmware files and install steps are published at release. This page explains how the firmware is planned to be set up, so you know what to expect.

What the Firmware Will Do

The firmware will read the sensors and radars and bring them into Home Assistant as entities. It will also control the LED ring, the buzzer and the speaker, and serve a local web page on port 80. The planned entities are listed in Sensor Definitions.

Local and Cloud

Local firmware Cloud firmware
Home Assistant Yes, through ESPHome Yes, on supported firmware
SmartHomeShop app No Yes
Where your readings go They stay on your network Also to your SmartHomeShop account
Needs an account and internet No Yes
Status for CeilSense Pro Planned, published at release Planned, not published

The app needs an account, internet and matching cloud firmware. Features and history depend on the model, firmware and subscription. Supported firmware lets you use both together. See SmartHomeShop App.

WiFi and Ethernet

WiFi and Ethernet will be separate firmware builds. The device runs one of them at a time.

  • WiFi firmware will open a setup network with a captive portal. Its name is published with the firmware.
  • Ethernet firmware will connect through the cable, with or without PoE.

Switching means installing the other firmware. See Network Configuration.

Radar Configurations

The firmware has to match the radar in the device.

Configuration Status
LD2412 + LD2450 Planned for WiFi and Ethernet
LD2460 Planned, will run the radar in top mode
LD6002B Not finished. Follows with the firmware for this radar, in top mode.

Installing a different radar means installing different firmware. Never fit a combination that is not supported: see Radar and Sensor Modules.

What Follows With Release Firmware

The whole firmware follows at release. Some parts are worth knowing about in advance:

  • the entities of the SHT45;
  • the microphone and Home Assistant Assist, including wake word details;
  • the effects of the LED ring and further buzzer sounds;
  • cloud firmware for the SmartHomeShop app;
  • firmware for the LD2460 and the LD6002B;
  • Room Designer polygon zones for LD2412 + LD2450;
  • the name of the setup network;
  • over-the-air updates through Home Assistant;
  • USB-C flashing steps.

Updates Over the Air

Updates over the air through Home Assistant arrive at release. ESPHome announces new firmware in Home Assistant, so you do not need to reach the sensor on the ceiling.

An update restarts the device, so the optical smoke sensing starts its warm-up again. See Optical Smoke Sensing.

Flashing Through USB-C

The steps for flashing through USB-C are published at release. Do not install firmware for V1, V2 or the Mini on the Pro: they use different hardware.

License

The firmware for the CeilSense family will be public under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license. You can change it for your own use. Commercial use is not allowed.

The LD2412, LD2450 and LD6002B radars are part of ESPHome. SmartHomeShop maintains the LD2460 component.

Custom Firmware

You can customize the firmware for your own use, but custom firmware affects support. We cannot give warranty or support for problems caused by custom or third-party firmware. See Warranty and Support.
