Hardware Versions

CeilSense Pro is one of three current ceiling sensors: Mini, V2 and Pro. This page compares them, shows how the Pro differs from V2 and V1, and helps you tell which one you have.

What the Pro Adds to V2

Everything in the CeilSense V2 base is also in the Pro: the light sensor, the air pressure sensor, the RGB LED ring, the buzzer, WiFi and Ethernet, and power through 110 to 240 V, PoE or USB-C. The Pro adds:

  1. Climate sensors built in. The Sensirion SCD41 is part of the device, so there is no separate module. A Sensirion SHT45 adds a second sensor for temperature and humidity.
  2. VOC and NOx. A Sensirion SGP41 follows changes in air quality as indices, not ppm.
  3. Speaker and microphone. For music, MP3 files, spoken announcements and Home Assistant Assist.
  4. Optical smoke sensing. Experimental, not EN 14604 certified and no replacement for a smoke alarm. See Optical Smoke Sensing.
  5. Surface mounting. Besides recessed mounting, the Pro can go on a mounting plate on the ceiling, also on concrete.
  6. A new design. The same design as the Mini, only larger. Its LED ring lights up all around, where the ring of V2 shines down.

Recessed, the Pro needs a larger cut-out than V2 (Ø 92 mm instead of Ø 76 mm), but less depth above the ceiling (about 28.6 mm instead of about 41.46 mm).

How the Pro Differs From V1

  • The hole is larger. V1 uses a 68 mm hole and a recessed Pro a 92 mm cut-out, so an existing V1 hole is too small.
  • The firmware is different. V1 and the Pro both use an ESP32-S3, but the rest of the hardware is different. Do not install V1 firmware on the Pro.
  • V1 firmware features do not carry over. The V1 firmware has a built-in motion light and CO2 warning. On the Pro, count on building these yourself with automations.

Which Model Should You Choose?

Choose CeilSense Mini if you want presence and light on PoE or USB-C, for example in a hallway, corridor, toilet or utility room, or in a bedroom where you only want light automation.

Choose CeilSense V2 if you want the complete ceiling sensor with CO2, temperature and humidity and three power options, for example in a living room, office or bedroom where air quality matters.

Choose CeilSense Pro if you also want VOC and NOx, optical smoke sensing, a speaker and a microphone. Do not choose it for fire safety: for that you need certified smoke alarms.

The Mini and the Pro can be surface-mounted. V2 is recessed only, so it needs a cavity above the ceiling. See the Installation Guide.

Which One Do You Have?

Start with the product name on your order. If you no longer have it, use this table:

Model How to recognize it
CeilSense Pro Recessed or surface, outer rim Ø 115 mm, speaker and microphone.
CeilSense V2 Recessed, outer rim Ø 95.5 mm, LED ring shines down.
CeilSense V1 Recessed in a 68 mm hole, LED ring shines down, no buzzer. See the V1 documentation.
CeilSense Mini Recessed or surface, outer rim Ø 85.61 mm, no mains connection.

Thread

CeilSense Pro uses an ESP32-S3, which has no Thread radio. It connects over WiFi or Ethernet.

CeilSense V2 and the Mini use a different chip that has an 802.15.4 radio, but no Thread firmware has been announced for them.
