Speaker and Voice

CeilSense Pro has a speaker with a MAX98357 amplifier and a digital microphone. The speaker is meant for music, MP3 files and spoken announcements through Home Assistant. The microphone is meant for voice control with Home Assistant Assist: ask a question, set a timer or switch the lights. You link sounds and actions yourself in automations.

Planned behavior. The firmware for CeilSense Pro is not written yet. Neither the speaker nor the microphone works today. This page describes how they are planned to work, and that can still change at release.

What You Need

  • CeilSense Pro with its firmware. Firmware and install steps are published at release: see Firmware.
  • Home Assistant
  • For spoken announcements: a text-to-speech service in Home Assistant
  • For voice control: a voice assistant in Home Assistant

Speaker

Home Assistant will show the speaker as a media player called Speaker, with the example entity ID media_player.ceilsense_pro_speaker.

Note: Entity IDs can differ per installation, because they start with your device name. Check yours on the device page. Replace tts.piper, binary_sensor.doorbell and similar IDs with your own.

Spoken Announcement

Play an MP3 File

Put the file in the media folder of Home Assistant and play it from an automation.

Music

To play music, choose Speaker as the player in the Media section of Home Assistant, or start it from an automation in the same way as the MP3 file above.

Microphone and Home Assistant Assist

The microphone is meant for voice control with Home Assistant Assist. You can ask a question, set a timer or switch the lights. Sounds and actions are linked by you in Home Assistant.

Set Up an Assistant in Home Assistant

You can prepare the assistant in Home Assistant itself. These steps are not specific to CeilSense Pro.

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Voice assistants.
  2. Create or edit an assistant.
  3. Choose your conversation agent.
  4. Choose your speech-to-text and text-to-speech options.
  5. Save the assistant.

Privacy

With Home Assistant Assist, processing is handled by your Home Assistant setup and can run fully on your local network. The services you choose in your assistant decide where your voice is processed, so check them before you start.
