Installation Guide

Step 1: Choose Your Firmware

  • Wi‑Fi (default): Your CeilSense ships with the Wi‑Fi build pre-installed.
  • Ethernet/PoE: Visit https://smarthomeshop.io/quick-start-ceilsense and select “Ethernet” firmware, flash your device before plugging in the PoE cable.

Step 2: Detection Area & Positioning

  • Mounting height: 2–4 m above the floor.
  • Presence detect diameter: 2–6 m.
  • Motion detect diameter: 8–12 m.
  • Cutout: Ø68 mm (fits Ø70 mm downlight cutouts).

Note: mmWave may detect small moving objects (pets, rotating fans). Position to focus on human detection.

Step 3: Prepare Cutout

Ensure a clean Ø68 mm hole. Cavity depth at least 60 mm and free of drafts.

Step 4: Provide Power/Data Cable

Run one of the following into the ceiling hole before inserting the sensor:

  • USB‑C cable (5 V ⎓ 1 A)
  • 110–240 VAC mains cable (L & N)
  • Ethernet (RJ45 PoE) for combined power & data

Step 5: Install the Spring

Attach the spring clips as shown in the quick video (see quick start link above) if not pre‑installed.

Step 6: Connect the Cable

  • PoE: Plug the RJ45 into the Ethernet port.
  • Mains: Insert Live (L) and Neutral (N) into the blue screw terminal.
  • USB‑C: Insert the USB‑C connector.

Step 7: Insert Sensor & Verify Startup

  • Compress the spring clips, push the sensor into the hole, release to grip the ceiling.
  • On power, the LED ring spins through a rainbow; after init it glows solid white for a few seconds.

Step 8: Connect with Wi‑Fi (if not using Ethernet)

  • On startup, CeilSense exposes a Wi‑Fi hotspot named CeilSense with password ceilsense.
  • Connect to this hotspot; a captive portal opens. Select your home SSID and enter the password.
  • If the portal does not open, browse to http://192.168.4.1/ manually.

Step 9: Connect to Home Assistant

Open Home Assistant. The device should be discovered automatically under Devices & Services via ESPHome. If not, add ESPHome integration manually by IP.
