Device Enclosure — Important Notice
The WaterMeterKit enclosure (the main unit) is not waterproof or moisture-resistant. The device contains sensitive electronics and must be protected from water and excessive humidity.
⚠️ Warranty Exclusion: Damage caused by water ingress or moisture is not covered by warranty.
Suitable Installation Locations
- ✅ Dry basements and cellars
- ✅ Dry crawl spaces
- ✅ Indoor utility cabinets / meter cupboards
- ✅ Outdoor water meter pits — only if dry and protected (see tips below)
Locations to Avoid
- ❌ Areas where water can drip or splash onto the device
- ❌ Flooded or regularly wet areas
- ❌ Unprotected outdoor locations exposed to rain
- ❌ Areas with constant condensation dripping onto the device
Outdoor Water Meter Pits
Many water meters are installed in underground pits or enclosures outside. These can be challenging environments:
💡 Option 1: If the pit is dry and well-sealed, you can install the WaterMeterKit inside, but monitor for moisture buildup.
💡 Option 2: Install the WaterMeterKit in a separate weatherproof enclosure (IP65+) inside the pit.
💡 Option 3: Mount the WaterMeterKit outside the pit in a dry location (e.g., garage, shed), and run only the sensor cable into the pit to reach the water meter.
Water Sensor — Important Notice
The water sensor included with the WaterMeterKit is only lightly moisture-resistant. It is designed for typical water meter cabinet conditions but is not suitable for permanently humid environments.
⚠️ Warranty Exclusion: Damage to the water sensor caused by excessive moisture or permanent humidity is not covered by warranty.
Protecting Your Sensor
- ✅ Normal water meter cabinet conditions are fine
- ✅ Occasional condensation is acceptable
- ❌ Do not install in constantly wet or flooded areas
- ❌ Do not submerge the sensor in water
- ❌ Avoid areas with constant high humidity (>80% RH)
Sensor Cable
The sensor cable is 3 meters long and is permanently attached to the WaterMeterKit (screw terminal connection). Extending it beyond this length is not recommended due to voltage drop causing unreliable readings.
⚠️ Warranty Exclusion: Any sensor cable modifications or extensions are at your own risk and not covered by warranty.
👉 See Installation Guide for details on disconnecting and cable limitations.
Replacement Sensors
The WaterMeterKit has a screw terminal connection for the sensor cable. If your water sensor needs to be replaced, please contact us:
Third-Party Modifications

Tinkerers welcome! We love that our products are built on open platforms like ESPHome. Feel free to experiment and customize — just know that once you modify the hardware or flash custom firmware, you're in DIY territory. Our Discord community is a great place to get help from fellow enthusiasts!
WaterMeterKit vs WaterP1MeterKit
The WaterMeterKit is a simplified version focused purely on water monitoring:
| Feature | WaterMeterKit | WaterP1MeterKit |
|---|---|---|
| Water monitoring | ✅ | ✅ |
| P1 energy meter (RJ12) | ❌ | ✅ |
| WiFi | ✅ | ✅ |
| Ethernet/PoE | ❌ | ✅ (V2/V3) |
| Sensor cable | Fixed (screw terminal) | Fixed (V1/V2) or Detachable (V3) |
| Temperature & Humidity | ✅ | ✅ |
💡 Need energy monitoring too? Consider the WaterP1MeterKit which includes P1 energy meter support and Ethernet/PoE connectivity.
