Troubleshooting Guide

If you encounter any issues with the P1MeterKit, try the following steps:

General Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Ensure All Cables Are Securely Connected

    • Verify that the RJ12 cable is securely connected to both the P1MeterKit and the energy meter's P1 port
    • If using USB-C power, ensure it's properly connected
  2. Check the Power Source

    • If using RJ12 for power: Verify your meter is DSMR v5 and supports powering devices
    • If using USB-C: Make sure the adapter is plugged into a working outlet
  3. Restart the P1MeterKit

    • Unplug all cables, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect
  4. Restart Home Assistant

    • Navigate to Settings → System → Restart
  5. Update Home Assistant

    • Go to Settings → System → Updates

Power Issues

LEDs Flashing Rapidly

If the LEDs flash rapidly when connected only via RJ12:

Cause: Your smart meter doesn't provide enough power via the P1 port.

Solution: Connect a USB-C power adapter (5V, 1A).

No LEDs at All

  1. Check if the RJ12 cable is properly connected
  2. Try USB-C power instead
  3. Try a different RJ12 cable
  4. Verify the P1 port on your meter is functional

WiFi Connectivity Issues

Can't Find the P1MeterKit Hotspot

If the p1meterkit WiFi hotspot doesn't appear:

  1. Wait 1-2 minutes after powering on
  2. Check if already configured — the hotspot only appears if WiFi is not configured
  3. Ensure proper power — LEDs should not be flashing rapidly
  4. Try a factory reset if the device was previously configured

Connected to Hotspot but No Captive Portal

  1. Open browser manually to http://192.168.4.1/
  2. Try a different device (phone vs laptop)
  3. Disable mobile data on your phone
  4. Try a different browser

Frequent WiFi Disconnections

  1. Check WiFi signal strength at your meter location
  2. Move closer to router or use a WiFi extender
  3. Check for interference from other 2.4 GHz devices
  4. Verify router settings:
    • Ensure 2.4 GHz band is enabled (5 GHz not supported)
    • Check if router has client limits

Data Reading Issues

Energy Data Not Updating

  1. Check RJ12 connection — ensure it's firmly connected to the P1 port
  2. Verify P1 port — some meters have multiple ports (MBus won't work, only P1)
  3. Check meter compatibility — ensure your meter is DSMR 4.x, 5.0, or ESMR 5.0
  4. Restart the P1MeterKit — unplug and reconnect

Gas Data Not Showing

Gas meters communicate via MBus protocol with an ID (1-4).

Solutions:

  1. Wait at least one hour — gas data updates hourly
  2. Check if gas meter is connected to your smart meter
  3. Try different MBus ID — see Usage Guide — Gas MBus Configuration

Wrong Readings / Data Seems Incorrect

  1. Compare with meter display — check if readings match your actual meter
  2. Check unit of measurement — some entities show Wh vs kWh
  3. Verify tariff times — tariff 1 vs 2 depends on your energy contract

Solar Production Not Showing

  1. Verify your inverter is connected to the grid and feeding back
  2. Check Power Produced — this shows real-time production
  3. Check Energy Produced Tariff 1/2 — these show cumulative totals

Home Assistant Issues

Device Not Discovered

If Home Assistant doesn't find the P1MeterKit:

  1. Verify WiFi connection — P1MeterKit must be on same network as HA
  2. Check ESPHome integration is enabled
  3. Add manually:
    • Go to Settings → Devices & Services
    • Click Add IntegrationESPHome
    • Enter the P1MeterKit's IP address

Entities Missing

  1. Check the device page in Home Assistant
  2. Enable disabled entities — some are disabled by default
  3. Restart Home Assistant after adding the device

LED Indicator Issues

Red Status LED Flashing Slowly

Meaning: Not connected to WiFi network or Home Assistant.

Solution: Follow the Connect to WiFi steps.

Red Status LED Flashing Rapidly

Meaning: Startup error, usually power-related.

Solutions:

  1. Connect USB-C power
  2. Try a different RJ12 cable
  3. Check if P1 port is functional

Advanced Troubleshooting

Accessing the Web Interface

If you can't connect to WiFi normally:

  1. Connect to the p1meterkit hotspot
  2. Navigate to http://192.168.4.1/
  3. Configure WiFi from the web interface

Firmware Updates

Ensure you're running the latest firmware:

  • Check for updates in Home Assistant's ESPHome integration
  • Or flash via USB-C — see Firmware Guide

Factory Reset

To completely reset the P1MeterKit:

  1. Via USB-C flashing:
    • Connect to computer via USB-C
    • Flash the latest firmware from smarthomeshop.io/firmware
    • This removes all configuration including WiFi credentials

Checking Logs

For detailed debugging:

  1. Adopt the device in ESPHome addon
  2. View logs from the ESPHome dashboard
  3. Look for error messages or connection issues

Network Communication & Privacy

100% Local Operation

The P1MeterKit works entirely locally. All sensor data stays on your local network:
